Ten primers, two entirely different jobs. Get that split right and the rest of the specification follows almost automatically; treat the collection as one product type and the wrong can ends up on the wall at the wrong stage.
Where Exterior Render Primers Sit in a UK Build-Up
Exterior render primers do two separate jobs on a UK wall: a consolidator reduces the absorbency of bare masonry, and a quartz key coat at 0.3 to 0.5 kg/m² gives the render a surface to grip. Both families are stocked here, and a full external wall insulation build-up normally uses one of each at different stages. - Bare brick, block, concrete or old plaster: a deep-penetrating consolidator soaks in, binds loose aggregate grains and evens out suction so the next layer does not overdry in patches.
- A cured, reinforced basecoat: a quartz key coat leaves a fine gritty film that the wet render physically holds onto, and it is tinted to the finish colour so the grey layer beneath never reads through.

Why This Primer Range Earns Its Place on a Specification
A primer is judged on what it lets the layer above it do, which makes it the least visible line on an order and one of the more consequential. Six things separate a specified primer from a generic one.
- Published rates for the products that carry them. Ceresit CT 16 states 0.3 to 0.5 kg/m², or 0.2 to 0.35 l/m²; Ceresit CT 17 Profi states 0.1 to 0.5 l/m². Two different bands, never quoted as one figure.
- The manufacturer names the right product for the job. The CT 17 sheet directs users to CT 16 or CT 15 for priming under thin-layer plasters, which settles which family belongs directly beneath a render.
- Drying intervals that fit a working day. CT 16 dries in approximately three hours and CT 17 in approximately two, so prime in the morning and render in the afternoon is realistic in settled conditions.
- Colour control on pale finishes. The CT 16 sheet recommends the primer in the colour corresponding to the render, which is the step that keeps pastels looking like the sample.
- Systems name their components individually. BBA Agrément Certificate 13/5018 specifies Atlas Silkon ANX as the key coat for the Atlas Silicone Render and Silicone-Silicate finishing coats, a reminder that certified build-ups pair one product with another rather than one type with another.
- One order, one delivery. Primer, basecoat and finish arrive together, which matters more than it sounds when the key coat has to be tinted to the render shade.

Applying the Primer: Rates, Drying and Working Range
Both documented primers are roller or brush products, and both sit inside the same working window: +5 °C to +25 °C for air and substrate, with relative humidity below 80%. The difference is in how they are handled. CT 16 is ready to use and is never diluted, because the quartz has to arrive at full concentration to leave the key the render needs. CT 17 may be diluted 1:1 with clean water on very absorbent or loose substrates, with any further coats applied undiluted, wet on wet.
One figure travels further than its scope allows. The fifteen-minute interval on the CT 17 sheet applies to gluing ceramic tiles onto cement and cement-lime substrates; for other substrates and other top coats the instruction is to wait until the primer has dried completely, which is the two-hour figure. Planning a render programme around fifteen minutes borrows a tiling number for facade work.
- Quantity for 100 m² of cured basecoat: 100 × 0.3–0.5 kg/m² = 30–50 kg; ÷ 15 kg per CT 16 container = 2.0–3.3, so three to four containers with a 10% allowance.

Installer Habits That Show in the Finish
Priming rewards patience more than technique, and a handful of habits separate an even elevation from one that needs a second look in low sun.
- Roll in single-lift sections. A medium-nap roller and a section no wider than one scaffold lift keeps a wet edge, so dried film never meets fresh product mid-wall.
- Follow the shade around the building in summer. The upper limit of the working range is +25 °C, and a south elevation in direct sun reaches it well before the air does.
- Check the surface, not the forecast. An infrared thermometer confirms a north-facing wall is genuinely above +5 °C, since masonry often sits several degrees below air temperature in shoulder months.
- Prime the whole building before topcoating. Equalising suction across every elevation before any render goes on is what keeps drying speed, and therefore colour, consistent between faces.
- Two-coat genuinely porous masonry. A diluted first pass penetrates, a full-strength second seals, and the first square metres of open blockwork always take more than the average.
Deciding Between the Two Primer Families
- Priming a cured basecoat under a coloured render? A quartz key coat is the answer, tinted to the finish, at the rate its own sheet states.
- Priming bare, dusty or unevenly absorbent masonry? A deep-penetrating consolidator goes on first, earlier in the build-up, and does not substitute for the key coat later.
- Working inside a certified system? Take the key coat the certificate names for that finishing coat rather than any product of the same type, and confirm the pairing before ordering.
- Finishing a plinth rather than a wall? The quartz key coat is the mandated substrate coat beneath the finishes in the mosaic render range for plinths, which is the usual companion order at ground level.

FAQ — Ordering and Applying Render Primers
How much primer is needed per square metre?
Ceresit CT 16 runs at 0.3 to 0.5 kg/m² and Ceresit CT 17 Profi at 0.1 to 0.5 l/m², the wider spread reflecting how much a porous wall drinks compared with a dense one. Rates for the Atlas lines come with their data sheets at order, so no figure is quoted for them here.
What is the difference between a quartz primer and a penetrating one?
Different jobs at different stages. A penetrating primer soaks into bare masonry to bind dust and regulate absorption before the adhesive or basecoat; a quartz primer stays on the surface of the cured basecoat and leaves aggregate for the render to key into. On a full build-up both appear, and neither replaces the other.
Can an Atlas primer go under a Ceresit render?
Where a specification has to demonstrate compliance, the sensible course is to stay inside one manufacturer's named build-up, because certificates list components individually rather than by type. On work that carries no such requirement the chemistry is generally compatible — the technical desk will confirm a specific pairing before the order leaves.
What are the temperature limits, and can primer be thinned?
