A rendered wall that has gone green, streaked or spotted is almost always a cleaning job rather than a rendering job, and the work is decided by chemistry rather than by pressure. The sheet sets out five stages, and the order matters more than the speed.

  1. Find and remove the damp source. The sheet opens here, naming horizontal or vertical damp proofing, roof flashing repairs and proper ventilation. Treating a wall while the moisture continues is what produces a short-lived result.
  2. Pre-clean the infected surface. Limited growth is brushed off and vacuumed; very tough infection is removed mechanically. The sheet allows a pressure washer at this stage, with the technique matched to the surface and the degree of contamination.
  3. Apply uniformly and profusely. Brush, painting roller or sponge, working until the surface is completely moist, then leave it for at least 6 to 12 hours. Dilution is maximum 1:5 with water, and heavy organic growth calls for a smaller ratio.
  4. Repeat three times. Fungi are present at different growth stages, and resistant spore forms such as conidia survive a single pass, so the sheet recommends three applications with a 12 to 24 hour break between each.
  5. Wait 48 hours before finishing. Painting and other finishing work start no earlier than 48 hours after application.

Removing Paint, Primer and Dispersion Render Residue

That makes it the clean-up product for the marks left behind while a facade is being finished.

  • Heavy marks: saturated with the liquid undiluted.
  • Dwell: left for 15 minutes in every case so the liquid can start working, then worked with a stiff brush and repeated if needed.
  • Rinse: the whole area washed thoroughly with water afterwards.
  • Conditions: substrate and ambient temperature +5 °C to +30 °C; density approximately 1.0 g/cm³; tools cleaned with clean water immediately after use.
  • Shelf life: 12 months from the production date on the pack.

What Not to Put on a Render Face

The acid cleaner in this range is the one most often reached for by mistake. Atlas Cement Away SZOP is an inorganic-acid concentrate scoped by its sheet to acid-resistant surfaces — ceramic tiles, stone, chromed, lacquered, stainless steel and plastic. Render is not among them, and the sheet notes that absorbent porous surfaces into which soiling has penetrated are difficult to clean.

Treat it as the product for the tiles, sills and fixtures adjacent to a rendered wall rather than for the wall itself. Where a white bloom is sitting on the render, the answer is the diagnostic route rather than an acid: establish whether it is efflorescence and where the moisture is coming from, because the deposit returns until that is resolved.

Two general cautions apply to both concentrates. Gloves, eye and face protection and protective clothing are specified, and the biocide is very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects, so release to the environment is avoided, spillage is collected and containers go to authorised disposal. Both sheets ask for a trial application on a less exposed area before committing to a facade — worth doing on any render whose exact formulation is unknown.
