Description

Atlas Plus adhesive is a deformable C2TE S1 cement-based adhesive for tiles, sold here in a 25 kg bag. Atlas designs it for almost any tile, substrate and building, including the difficult jobs: tile on tile, heated floors, plasterboard, OSB, terraces, balconies, pools and heavy traffic. It fixes ceramic, porcelain, stone, mosaic and glass on walls and floors, indoors and outside, in a bed of 2 to 10 mm, and it can be used down to +1 °C. It sits in the shop's tile adhesives range.

Atlas Plus Adhesive at a Glance

  • Class C2TE S1. Improved cement adhesive (C2) with extended open time (E) and reduced slip (T), and deformable (S1): the set adhesive takes a deflection of 2.5 to 5 mm in the EN 12002 test.
  • Bond declared at 1.0 N/mm² or more at the start, after heat ageing, after soaking in water and after freeze-thaw cycles (Declaration of Performance 222/1/CPR).
  • Bed of 2 to 10 mm. Thin coat on an even substrate, or on an uneven one after it has been floated.
  • Open time of at least 30 minutes, and tiles can go on from the top of the wall down without slipping.
  • Works from +1 °C to +25 °C, and floors can be walked on after about 24 hours, even in a cold room in autumn or spring.
  • Polypropylene and cellulose fibres in the mix help it cope with vibration, temperature swings and substrates that move, and limit tiles sinking into the bed.

Which Tiles, Rooms and Buildings

Atlas lists Atlas Plus adhesive for almost every tiling job in its technical data sheet:

  • Tiles: glazed wall tiles, terracotta, porcelain, laminated porcelain, clinker, stone, ceramic mosaic, concrete tiles, composite boards and insulation or acoustic panels. Any tile format, including slim tiles.
  • Natural stone, glass mosaic and glass: do an application test first (below); for glass and printed tiles, also follow the tile maker's advice.
  • Rooms and places: kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, garages, terraces, balconies, outside stairs, walkways, facades including insulation systems, plinths, showers and rooms washed down with plenty of water, saunas, swimming pools, fountains and jacuzzis (without aggressive chemicals), and drinking water tanks.

The product has a Hygienic Attest, and Atlas recommends it for drinking water tanks, the food industry, healthcare buildings and nurseries. Rinse a water tank with water once the adhesive has set.

Traffic can be low, medium or heavy, in homes, offices, schools, hospitals, shops, places of worship, industrial buildings, multi-storey car parks, warehouses and spa buildings.

Substrates and How to Prepare Them

Atlas Plus adhesive goes onto the standard substrates: cement and anhydrite screeds, cement and cement-lime plasters, gypsum plaster in dry or wet rooms, aerated concrete, brick, block and gypsum block walls. It also goes onto the difficult ones:

Substrate What to do first
Old ceramic or stone tiles Remove loose ones, grind glaze, prime: Atlas Ultragrunt
OSB/3, OSB/4 and chipboard Floors 25 mm, walls 18 mm or more; sand, prime
Plasterboard, gypsum-fibre and cement-fibre boards Stable and clean; prime if absorbent
Concrete At least 3 months old, primed with Atlas Ultragrunt
Timber floors and wood panels Boards over 25 mm; panels 22 mm on Atlas M-System
Metal, steel and plastic Clean, de-rust or sand, prime with Atlas Ultragrunt
Brick and block walls Two-coat render, left rough

On old tiles, tap-test the surface first, clean and degrease it and fill gaps, for example with Atlas ZW 330. OSB and chipboard must not flex under load; sand them with 40 to 60 grit, and in damp rooms waterproof them. Concrete must be below 4 % moisture, with release agents removed and defects repaired. On plastic, test the bond before tiling. Bare brick or block works only where the wall is true and fully jointed.

Every substrate must be stable, seasoned and clean. The adhesive bed is at most 10 mm, so level bigger dips first with Atlas ZW 330 or a screed such as Atlas SMS 30. Treat algae or mould with Atlas Mykos Plus. Prime absorbent or patchy surfaces with Atlas Grunt NKP (undiluted) or Atlas Uni-Grunt Ultra, and low-absorbency or painted ones with Atlas Ultragrunt. In wet areas, waterproof first, for example with Atlas Woder E (tile after 2 hours as damp-proofing, 4 hours as waterproofing) or Atlas Woder Duo (after 12 hours).

Mixing and Fixing the Tiles

  1. Mix. Pour the bag of Atlas Plus adhesive into 6.5 to 7.25 litres of clean water and mix with a slow-speed drill and paddle until smooth. Leave it 5 minutes, then mix again. Use it within about 4 hours and stir it again every hour.
  2. Spread. Rub a thin coat into the substrate, then add a thicker coat and comb it straight away with a notched trowel, in one direction where you can (upright on walls).
  3. Full contact where it counts. On floors, outside and with large tiles, the tile must sit fully in the adhesive: back-butter the tile when needed. For large-format tiles, use one of Atlas's combinations: 8 mm notch on the substrate with 6 mm on the tile, 10 mm with 4 mm, or 12 mm with a 1 mm skim on the tile.
  4. Lay. Press each tile in within about 30 minutes, with at least two thirds of its back in contact, and clean squeezed-out adhesive from the joints as you go. You can still slide a tile for about 10 minutes.
  5. Do not soak the tiles, and allow for any bow in the tile when setting the bed depth.

How Many Bags to Order

Atlas's average figures for an even substrate, with what one 25 kg bag of Atlas Plus adhesive covers worked out from them. One bag covers about 9 m² of 30 x 30 floor tiles:

Tile size (cm) Wall: notch / kg per m² Floor: notch / kg per m² One bag covers about
2 x 2, 10 x 10 4 mm / 1.5 4 mm / 1.5 (10 x 10 floor: 6 mm / 2.3) 17 m² at 1.5; 11 m² at 2.3
15 x 60, 20 x 25, 25 x 40, 30 x 30 6 mm / 2.3 8 mm / 2.9 11 m² at 2.3; 9 m² at 2.9
30 x 60, 40 x 40, 50 x 50 8 mm / 2.9 10 mm / 3.5 9 m² at 2.9; 7 m² at 3.5
60 x 60 10 mm / 3.5 12 mm / 4.3 7 m² at 3.5; 6 m² at 4.3
Bigger than 60 x 60 Combined method, about 5.1 5 m²
Plank tiles, e.g. 20 x 90 8 mm / 2.9 10 mm / 3.5 9 m²; 7 m²

An uneven substrate and back-buttering both use more, so round up. A trowel with an 8 x 8 mm notch or a 10 x 10 mm notch covers the common floor and wall sizes.

Grouting, Heating and Use

  • Grouting: walls after about 16 hours, floors after about 24 hours, with grout from the grouts and silicones range. Fill movement joints, corners and joints at baths and basins with sanitary silicone.
  • Loads: foot traffic after about 24 hours, full foot traffic after 3 days, vehicles and full water load in a pool or tank after 14 days (times at about 23 °C and 55 % humidity).
  • Underfloor heating: the screed must have been heated up first. Tile with the heating off and switch it on after at least 14 days, or tile with it on at a steady temperature of no more than +35 °C and keep it there for 14 days. Tiling onto other heating that is running, for example heating bedded in the adhesive layer, is not possible.

Wash tools with clean water straight after use; set residue comes off with Atlas Szop. A bag keeps for 12 months from the production date printed on it.
