Description
Fox Initium Color is a grey, ready-to-use base coat paint for interior walls and ceilings, sold here in a 1 litre tin. It goes on before a topcoat or a decorative paint and gives the next coat one even surface to work on: one colour, one texture and one level of absorbency, so the finish dries the same everywhere. It belongs to the Fox structural paints line and sits with the rest of the Fox Dekorator decorative paints at Renders World.
What Fox Initium Color Does Before the Finish
A decorative paint shows every difference in the wall under it. A filled patch, a strip of new plaster or an old painted area each take up paint at their own rate and in their own shade, and the finish picks that up. Fox Initium Color is the coat that removes those differences first. It is made on an acrylic binder with fillers, and its grey colour hides the patchwork of the substrate before the decorative coat goes on.
It goes on cement and cement-lime plaster, gypsum plaster, finishing coats and fillers, concrete, brick, block and aerated concrete, plasterboard, OSB, paper, vinyl and fibreglass wallpaper, and old acrylic paint. The maker lists five things it does for the next coat:
- Levels the colour and texture of the substrate, so the wall reads as one surface.
- Evens out absorbency, so the topcoat dries at the same rate across the wall.
- Improves bonding of the coats that follow.
- Improves hiding and reduces how much topcoat paint the wall takes.
- Makes the topcoat easier to apply.
It is an interior product. The maker names homes, public buildings including schools and healthcare sites, commercial and service premises, industrial buildings, outbuildings and infrastructure as places to use it.
Why Choose This Grey Base Coat
- Grey under decorative paint — a grey ground that evens out a patchy wall in colour and texture before the topcoat or decorative finish goes on.
- One base for many walls — plaster, concrete, block, plasterboard, OSB, wallpaper and old acrylic paint are all on the maker's list.
- Ready in two hours — the topcoat can follow after about 2 hours in normal room conditions.
- Can be tinted — the maker allows colouring with its own pigments, such as the Fox pigment concentrate.
- Low VOC — at most 29.9 g/l, under the 30 g/l limit, and it holds a hygiene certificate.

How to Apply This Base Coat
When New Walls Are Ready
New cement, cement-lime and gypsum plaster needs one week for every centimetre of thickness before painting. New concrete needs about a month. Both times assume around +20 °C and 55 % humidity; a colder or damper room needs longer.
- Prepare the wall. It must be stable, air-dry and even, free of dust, dirt, wax and grease, and free of old coats that would stop the paint from bonding. Fill cracks and gaps with a filler from the finishing plaster and filler range, so the wall is even before painting.
- Treat old surfaces. Wash old, well-bonded emulsion and plasterboard with water and detergent and let them dry. Scrape off old distemper and anything poorly bonded. Clean mouldy patches and protect them with Atlas Mykos Plus. On wallpaper, check the bond first: loose paper can blister when painted.
- Prime only where it is needed. A very absorbent or dusty wall takes a priming emulsion first. Plasterboard and walls already painted with emulsion take Fox Initium Color without a primer.
- Stir. The paint comes ready to use and must not be mixed with other materials. Stir it to an even consistency with a low-speed drill and a paint paddle.
- Apply a thin, even coat. Use a roller, a brush or a spray. A second coat goes on only when the first is dry. For machine work up to 10 % clean water is allowed; the maker's airless settings are a Graco CED StMax II 595 with a PAA521 nozzle, 60 mesh filter and 220 bar, undiluted or with 5 % water.
- Topcoat after 2 hours. Wait at least 2 hours, longer in a cool or damp room, and keep the room between +5 °C and +25 °C.
Air the room while you paint and afterwards until the smell has gone. Wash tools in clean water straight after use. When spraying, wear respiratory, eye and hand protection. Brushes and rollers are in the rollers and paint brushes range.
Grey or White Under the Finish?
Both prepare an interior wall for the coat that follows. The difference is the colour of the ground and the finish going on top:
| Job | What to use |
|---|---|
| Grey ground under Fox decorative paints | Fox Initium Color |
| White ground under latex paint, large areas | Atlas Base Coat Paint, 10 l |
| Wall to be plastered, rough key | Fox Bonding Primer |
For the paints that go on top, see the internal paints range.
How Much to Order
Renders World sells Fox Initium Color in a 1 litre tin. It covers about 9 m² per litre in one coat on a smooth wall; a rough or very absorbent wall takes more.
- One 1 l tin — about 9 m² in one coat.
- A wall that needs a second coat — about 4.5 m² per tin.
Orders are processed the same day when the stock is there, and the team quotes delivery after the order. You can also collect in person from the Renders World counter in Southampton during opening hours.
FAQ — Coverage, Drying and Use
How far does one tin go?
About 9 m² in one coat on a smooth wall. If the wall needs a second coat, plan on about 4.5 m² per tin.
How soon can the decorative paint go on?
After about 2 hours, once the base coat is dry. That time is measured at 23 °C and 55 % humidity, so give it longer in a cool or damp room.
Does plasterboard need a primer first?
No. Plasterboard and walls already painted with emulsion take Fox Initium Color directly. Only a very absorbent or dusty wall needs a priming emulsion first.
Can I change its colour?
Yes. The maker allows tinting with its own pigments, such as the Fox pigment concentrate.
Can I use it outside?
No. Fox Initium Color is made for walls and ceilings indoors.
