Finishing plaster for smooth walls and ceilings indoors, in two kinds: ready-mixed polymer skims in tubs, used straight from the lid, and gypsum powders you mix with water on site. Renders World stocks both, so the choice comes down to the job: taping plasterboard joints, skimming a whole room by roller, or plastering bare masonry before the skim.
Which Finishing Plaster for Which Job
The Atlas and Knauf plasters here are made for interior walls and ceilings. They differ in how they arrive, how thick a coat they take and how long you wait before the next step.
| Product | Comes as | Main job | Coat thickness | Coverage, about | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Atlas GTA 18 kg / 5 kg | Ready-mixed tub | Taped joints and full skims, Q1 to Q4 | Up to 3 mm | 18 m² a coat (18 kg), 5 m² (5 kg) | Up to 6 h per 1 mm to dry |
| Atlas GO! 25 kg | Ready-mixed bucket | Full-surface skim by roller, Q2 to Q4 | Up to 3 mm | 16 m² a coat | 4 to 4.5 h per 1 mm to dry |
| Atlas Plus Gipsar 20 kg | Powder, mixed with water | Trowel skims and levelling | 5 mm a coat, 10 mm in all | 25 m² at 1 mm | Usable about 1 h once mixed |
| Knauf Goldband 30 kg | Powder, mixed with water | One-coat plaster on bare masonry | 8 to 50 mm, 15 mm on average | 2.3 m² at 15 mm | Workable about 90 min |
| Dolina Nidy building gypsum 15 kg / 2 kg | Powder, mixed with water | Repairs and fixing work | Patches and fixings | Small mixes, 0.6 l water per kg | Sets from about 3 minutes |
The range also holds Atlas Gipsar Uni white filler in 20 kg bags, and the Atlas Rollo Finish roller, 230 mm wide, with bevelled sides that stop the mass building up at the edges and a handle that takes a telescopic pole.
Ready-Mixed Plaster or Powder
A ready-mixed finishing plaster is the quicker start: you stir it, load the hawk or the roller and go. The two kinds trade off like this:
- Ready-mixed tubs — no mixing: GTA needs no water at all for trowel work, and both tubs take up to 2 % clean water by roller or machine. They dry slowly, though — up to 6 hours per millimetre for GTA, 4 to 4.5 for GO! — and the coats stay thin, 3 mm at most.
- Powders — mixed with water on site and set, so they go on thicker and can be worked over sooner. Whatever you mix has to be used before it sets.
Among the powders, Plus Gipsar takes up to 5 mm in one coat and wants 7 to 9 litres of water per 20 kg bag for trowel work. Goldband goes up to 50 mm on a wall with about 18 litres per 30 kg bag. Building gypsum begins to set within minutes, for a patch you can work over the same day.
Skimming Plasterboard: Joints and Finish Levels
Plasterboard is finished in levels, Q1 to Q4, and the level decides how much of the board the finishing plaster covers:
- Q1 — joints and screw heads only, with tape. Enough under tiles, panels or in technical rooms.
- Q2 — the standard: joints filled flush, ready for wallpaper, paint or a decorative plaster.
- Q3 — a full-surface skim up to 3 mm, for thin wallpaper, thin matt paints and silky or glossy paints.
- Q4 — a full skim of 1 to 3 mm, polished, under glossy wallpaper, gloss paint or a polished plaster.
GTA is the one for the joints themselves: it is a dual-purpose joint compound, so it beds the tape, fills the gap between boards and covers screw heads, then carries on as the finishing coat. Atlas GO! is made for the full-surface work of Q2 to Q4 by roller, and Atlas sends you back to GTA for taping and first levelling.
Plastering Masonry Before the Skim
Bare brick, block or concrete needs a base coat before any finishing plaster. Knauf Goldband is a hand-applied gypsum plaster for one coat on walls and ceilings:
- Thickness — from 8 mm, about 15 mm on average; above 35 mm on a wall Knauf asks for a second coat.
- Mixing and laying — about 18 litres of water per bag, ruled flat with a straightedge and closed with a float.
- Drying — about 14 days for a 10 mm coat with good ventilation.
- Finish — it takes paint and wallpaper directly; for a smooth paint finish Knauf adds a gypsum skim on top, which is where Plus Gipsar or one of the tubs comes in.
Before You Start
- Prime first. Atlas asks for a primer on over-absorbent backgrounds and a bonding layer on smooth, low-suction ones such as concrete. The primers range holds the Atlas Uni-Grunt and NKP primers Atlas names for these tubs.
- Mind the room. Work the ready-mixed tubs between +5 °C and +25 °C, with room humidity up to 70 %, and keep draughts and strong sun off the fresh coat.
- Have the tools ready. Stainless trowels and floats are in skimming blades and spatulas; boards and drylining accessories are in drylining.
The whole group sits under building materials.

Finishing Plaster: Questions Buyers Ask
Which finishing plaster do I use on plasterboard joints?
Take Atlas GTA. It is made to bed jointing tape, fill the gap between boards and cover screw heads, and then serve as the finishing coat. Atlas GO! is for the full-surface skim over the top.
Can I roll the plaster on instead of trowelling it?
Yes, with the Atlas tubs. GO! is built for the roller, and GTA goes on by roller with a pile of at least 11 mm. Both are smoothed with a stainless float straight after rolling, and both take up to 2 % clean water for roller work.
How thick can one coat be?
For a ready-mixed finishing plaster, up to 3 mm — that goes for GTA and GO!; up to 5 mm for Plus Gipsar with 10 mm in total, and 8 to 50 mm for Knauf Goldband, which is a base plaster rather than a skim.
How long before I can paint?
Wait until the coat is fully dry. At 20 °C and 60 % humidity a 1 mm coat of GO! dries in 4 to 4.5 hours and GTA in up to 6 hours; a 10 mm coat of Goldband takes about 14 days. Prime before painting or papering.
Can these plasters be used outside?
No. Atlas and Knauf make the tubs, Plus Gipsar and Goldband for interior walls and ceilings. For outside walls, choose one of the renders Renders World stocks instead.
