Description

The TytanX facade rasp 1200 mm is Instar's aluminium rasp for polystyrene, built for flattening EPS boards on an insulated wall before the reinforcing coat goes on. Three replaceable 400 mm steel blades run along a 1200 mm anodised profile, and the whole tool weighs 1.158 kg. You will find it, with the hand rasps and scrapers, under scrapers and rasps.

Why the TytanX Facade Rasp 1200 mm Suits an EPS Wall

Boards fixed to a facade never sit perfectly in one plane. Before the basecoat, the high spots are taken off so the mesh layer goes on at an even thickness. A hand rasp deals with one patch at a time; a 1200 mm profile spans several boards in a single stroke.

  • Flatness you can see. Instar designed the straight profile so that the tool itself shows whether the surface is level, without a spirit level or a straightedge.
  • Less adhesive and less work. The maker says that a flatter board surface means less adhesive used, less effort and a shorter job.
  • No clogging. The profile is open at the ends, so rasped polystyrene falls out as you go instead of packing inside.
  • A body that lasts. The aluminium is anodised, which makes it harder wearing and easier to keep clean.

The Blades and How They Are Changed

The cutting face is three modular blades of galvanised carbon steel sheet, perforated with sharp-edged holes. Each blade measures 400 x 25 x 12.7 mm, so three of them fill the TytanX facade rasp 1200 mm end to end. They are held in by wall plugs and small "flea" screws.

  • Change the blades, not the rasp. When the teeth go dull, the profile stays and the blades come out.
  • One set, one full change. Renders World stocks the three-blade replacement set for this profile (Instar code 276-0043, 3 x 400 mm, screws included), which re-blades the tool in one go.
  • Seat them properly. Tighten every screw before work: a blade fitted badly can come out.

Rasping Technique

  • Go diagonally. Draw the rasp across the boards at an angle, or work in smooth circles in two directions.
  • Finish crosswise. A second set of passes across the first gives a smooth, even face quickly.
  • Then the basecoat. Once the polystyrene insulation boards are flat, the mesh is bedded in one of the adhesives and basecoats for polystyrene.

1200 mm or 1600 mm?

Instar makes this rasp in four profile lengths: 800, 1200, 1600 and 2000 mm. Renders World stocks two of them, and the TytanX facade rasp 1200 mm is the lighter one.

FAQ

How many blades does the 1200 mm rasp take?

Three. Each blade is 400 mm long, and the 1200 mm replacement set holds exactly three, with the screws.

What does it weigh?

1.158 kg, for an overall size of 1200 x 50 x 75 mm.

Will rasped polystyrene build up inside the profile?

No. The ends of the profile are left open, so the dust and crumbs clear as you work.

Is the 1600 mm rasp the same tool, only longer?

Same line, same build and the same 400 mm blades; the 1600 mm profile holds four of them and weighs 1.544 kg.
