Wall Varnish 1L, Fox Hydrophobic Varnish for Bathrooms

This wall varnish is Fox Dekorator Hydrophobic Varnish in a 1 l pack: a clear, satin coat for painted and plastered walls and ceilings indoors. It forms a water-repellent layer that keeps water, efflorescence and dirt off the surface and makes the wall easier to wash. The maker recommends it for bathrooms, kitchens and shower areas. What This Wall Varnish Does

The varnish is made on acrylic and polysiloxane/silane resins, comes ready to use and has no smell. On the wall it works in two ways:

• Protection — a hydrophobic coat that repels water, protects against efflorescence and dirt, and gives a long-lasting beading effect; it penetrates deep into the substrate.
• Easier cleaning — the coat is resistant to washing and has abrasion resistance class 1.
• Finish — colourless and satin; it brings out the depth of the colour underneath.
• Decoration — glitter or mica can be added for a decorative effect.

Where to Use It

Fox Dekorator makes this wall varnish for interior walls and ceilings, and recommends it where humidity runs higher:

• Bathrooms and kitchens in homes.
• Walls inside shower rooms.
• Spa zones and hotel swimming pools.
• Any wall that needs thorough protection against moisture.

It goes over renders and paints: cement and cement-lime plasters, concrete, brick and block walls, gypsum plasters and fillers, polymer finishing coats, plasterboard and OSB, paper, vinyl and glass-fibre wallpapers, and silicate, silicone and acrylic paint coats.

What It Will Not Do

• Not for floors — the varnish cannot be used to impregnate floor surfaces.
• Not a damp-proof course — it repels water on the surface; walls still need their own protection against capillary moisture.
• Gentle cleaning only — the coat cannot take long scrubbing with coarse cleaners, scratching, strong chemicals or pressure washing.

How to Apply It

1. Prepare the wall. It must be stable, air-dry, clean and even, free of dust, dirt, wax, grease and old coats that would stop it bonding. Make it even and fill any gaps before varnishing.
2. Give fresh work time. Wait 3 to 4 weeks on fresh cement-lime plaster, about a month on fresh concrete and 2 weeks on fresh gypsum plaster.
3. Treat the old surface. Wash well-bonded acrylic or latex paint with water and detergent and let it dry; remove old distemper and loose coats. Prime old absorbent or dusty walls, for example with a primer emulsion, and give them a base coat such as the grey Initium base coat. Clean walls with fungi and protect them with Atlas Mykos Plus.
4. Mix and apply. Stir the wall varnish well, then apply it with a brush, roller or decorating tools between +5 °C and +30 °C, at relative humidity below 80 %.
5. Add the second coat. Apply two coats; the second goes on after about 4 hours, once the first has dried. A further coat can follow where the wall needs it, for example in a shower cabin.
6. Let it cure. The surface is dry in about 2 hours and ready for use after about 12 hours at 23 °C and 55 % humidity; colder or damper rooms take longer.

Try a small area first to check the method. Use varnish from one production date on one surface, or mix all packs together, and wash tools with water and detergent before the varnish dries.

How Far a Litre Goes

One litre of this wall varnish covers about 15 m² in a single coat, and every further coat takes its own share. The real figure depends on:

• how rough and absorbent the wall is;
• how the wall was prepared;
• the tool and the person applying it.

For bigger rooms there is a 3 l pack of the same varnish.

Keep the wall varnish in a dry, cool, ventilated place in its closed original pack, away from sun, heat and open flame. It is harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects and contains isothiazolinones that may cause an allergic reaction, so keep it out of the reach of children and follow the label.
