Description

Fox Bonding Primer in the 1 kg tub is the small-job size of the Fox Dekorator primer that goes on before plaster, structural paint or tiles. It comes ready to use, is built on polymer resins and quartz flours, and leaves a rough, aggregate-filled film that the next layer keys into. One coat from this tub covers about 7 m², which suits a feature wall, a ceiling patch or a single splashback. Renders World stocks it alongside the Fox Dekorator range of decorative plasters and paints.

When Fox Bonding Primer 1 kg Is the Right Size

  • A single feature wall — around 7 m² of wall before a decorative plaster or a textured paint.
  • Repairs and patches — a filled or replastered area that has to take the same finish as the wall around it.
  • A small tiled area — a splashback or a strip behind a basin, primed before the tile adhesive goes on.
  • A trial panel — a test of the full build-up on one section before you order for a whole room.

For a whole room or several walls, the 3 kg grit primer tub holds three times as much of the same Fox Bonding Primer.

Why Prime Before Plaster, Paint or Tiles

Fox Bonding Primer prepares the background for whatever comes next in four ways:

  • Grip. The aggregate dries into a rough face, so trowelled plaster and textured paint hold on and are easier to shape.
  • Bond on both sides. It sticks firmly to the wall and to the plaster laid over it.
  • Even suction. It lowers and evens out the absorbency of the wall and strengthens its surface, which helps the next material spread evenly instead of drying out in patches.
  • One background colour. Old filler, new plaster and bare block stop showing through as different tones under the finish.

Walls and Ceilings It Goes On

The primer is made for interiors of every kind — houses and flats, schools, surgeries and other public buildings, shops and offices, factories, farm buildings and stations. It can go onto:

  • cement-lime and cement plaster;
  • concrete, whether poured on site or precast;
  • unplastered brick, ceramic and silicate blocks and aerated concrete blocks;
  • gypsum plaster and gypsum or polymer skims and fillers;
  • plasterboard and OSB.

On top of it go decorative plasters, structural paints and ceramic or stone tiles — fixed with a tile adhesive suited to the tile — as well as skim plasters and fillers. Check the priming advice of the finish you are using as well: its maker has the last word on what goes underneath.

Applying It, Step by Step

  1. Check the wall is sound, seasoned and air-dry. Remove dust, dirt, lime, oil, grease, old paint and weak layers, and repair cracks and defects first.
  2. Cover floors, skirtings, window frames and sockets. Dried primer is hard to remove.
  3. Stir the tub of Fox Bonding Primer well. Use it as it comes, without water.
  4. Apply one thin, even coat with a roller or brush. Our rollers and paint brushes range has both.
  5. Rinse the roller or brush in clean water as soon as you finish.
  6. Let it dry for 4–6 hours, then plaster, paint or tile.

Coverage From 1 kg Tubs

Tubs of 1 kg Wall or ceiling area, one coat
1 about 7 m²
2 about 14 m²
3 about 21 m²

The maker gives an average of 0.14 kg/m² for the primer, so one kilo does about 7 m². Rough or very absorbent walls, the effect you want from the finish and the way you work all move that figure, so allow a little extra on a porous block wall.

Storing the Tub

  • Shelf life — 24 months from the production date printed on the tub.
  • Storage, transport and safety — follow the label on the tub and the primer's safety data sheet from its maker.
